2018 and 1998 Dow’s Quinta Senhora da Ribeira Part 1/2

How fun to have two wines with 20 years between them, I will taste and write about the same two vintages of Quinta do Vesuvio shortly. Today, Dow’s single quinta, Senhora da Ribeira. It is strange, in today’s world were terroir has become the number one selling point of fine wine, that some people still regard a vintage port finer than the single quinta vintage ports. Yes, they are blends of all the best grapes, at least that is the idea, yet areas like Barolo and Barbaresco are splitting up old blends and have made single vineyard or single commune wines on a different scale the last decades as they feel terroir shows more.

I actually tend to find the same with single quinta vintage port. Maybe some of them lack some of the power and brute force, but as a keen driver, I hat power is not all. Handling and brakes are maybe even more important, but many details make a car. And many details make a wine. And I tend to find that single quinta’s show terroir and details a bit more and sometimes quite a bit more than some vintage ports. I will be opening Vesuvio and taste them side by side the two below, and also follow them over a few days as I actually tend to find a day of air (standing cool, with a cork in a fridge) tend to open younger ports up quite a bit. I know, some say you need to drink these quickly, but I actually tasted a quite impressive 2011 Vintage bottle that had been opened in November just the other day, top fruit gone, but what a remarkable texture and structure still.

Only 25 hectares of vineyards out of 43,5 hectares for the entire estate, means our Lady of the river, and has been in the family since 1912. Predominantly south-east and east facing and 105 to 420 meters of altitude. Souzao and Alicante Bouchet co-fermented for the first time in the 2018. But also only a smaller part of the blend. This property is just across the river more or less from Quinta do Vesuvio. The 2014 is 45% Touriga Franca, 40 Touriga Nacional, 15% co fermented Alicante Bouchet and Souzao. They feel you get a better marriage between the varieties if you co-ferment.

2018 Dow’s Quinta Senhora da Ribeira

Deep ruby. Rich, dark fruity, blueberries and blackberries nose, just dense, intense and impressive. High notes of floral notes and a whiff of mint. A mineral touch beneath, which is similar but at this stage much more subdued than in the 1998 below. Superb nose. Fresh acidity, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries, smooth, detailed and intense, beautifully balanced, incredibly smooth, long.94

Ruby, garnet rim. Scented, dark fruits, staring dates, anise, floral notes behind, detailed nose, intense. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, dark fruits, anise, spices, rich and intense, playful, a touch of granite minerals behind, lovely balance, rounded and smooth with two hours of air, long. 94

1985 Château Margaux

DEC 17 Mid neck fill, fairly soaked cork. Ruby, garnet rim.  Shy first, just some tobacco, earthy notes and tobacco. After about half an hour in decanter, violets shows up, then it blossoms, figs, dates, light mineral note, detailed if never the most intense bottle. Fresh acidity, smooth tannins, velvety texture, superb balance, again this floral high note, not as fruity but highly elegant, long. 95

Ruby, garnet rim. Some prunes, figs. Scented, detailed and elegant nose, surprisingly evolved. Freshish acidity, ripe tannins, fruity, rounded, figs and dades, sweet note to it, long and spicy finish. 92

Ruby. Scented, red berries, figs, elegant nose, nunaced and detailed. Freshish acidity, ripe tannins, soft texture, figs and plums, fruity, more tannic finish, bit grippy, long. 91

Ruby, thin brick rim. Figs, prunes, slightly floral, bit easy going nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity, rounded, fresh, slightly biting finish, structured, long but also a bit drying. 90

1987 Gros Frère & Soeur Clos de Vougeot
(Magnum) Ruby, brick rim. Some figs, red berries, leather, black tea nose, mature. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity if leaner palate and body, almost scented in the mouth, fairly nuanced, bit lean but elegant finish. Drink while it gives this much pleasure. 91

1999 Château Pichon Longueville Baron
58 cs 37 m 5 cf. Highest ever vintage of Merlot at Pichon Longueville Baron. Ruby, very thin garnet rim. Dark fruits, some figs, some leather, leaner nose, evolving. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fresh, fruity, ripe if leaner, somewhat firm still but starting to mellow, long and fairly fresh finish. Give it an hour or two in decanter, will last fifteen years pluss still. 91

2000 Château Pichon Longueville Baron
70 cs 25 m 5 cf Ruby. Tight, cassis, some vanilla, youthful, some leather, mint and faint cigar note far back. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, somewhat lean body but quite intense aromas. Dark fruits, cassis and blueberries, leather and anise, firm finish. Not even close to being ready, long. 96

1996 Château Pichon Longueville Baron
80 cs 20 m Ruby. Ruby, thin garnet rim. Tobacco, dark fruits, maturing nose, somewhat scented, some musk, quite intense nose, light chocolate note. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fresh, fruity, ripe, quite juicy, structured with fruit and freshness to back it up, long. Will last at least twenty years more. 95

2001 Château Pichon Longueville Baron
70 cs 27 m 3 cf Ruby. Elegant nose, scented, some leather and cigars, lovely figs note, dark fruits, cassis, layered, opening up beautifully now. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fresh, fruity, ripe, quite intense, fairly juicy, lovely balance. Still somewhat firm structure but drinking very nicely now. 93

Fresh acidity, lighter mousse, caramel, oxidated apples, bit bitter and not fully blalanced, burnt caramel notes, bitter tea. Bit hollow. With answer in hand I think its a faulty bottle. 87

1970 Gaja Barbaresco
Served blind. Cloudy ruby, brown orange hue and orange rim. Tobacco, cherries, few figs, liquorice nose, intense, some notes of iodine, mature. Fresh acidity, few tannins, mature and borderline old, drying finish and on its way down, but not there yet. Some chocolate and coffee. 88

1967 Giovannini Moresco Barbaresco del Pajore
Served blind. Bright ruby, orange rim. Red berries, mint, tar, roses, cherries, strawberries, sous bois, seductive nose, detailed, refreshing, but mature. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fresh, fruity but slightly iodine and metallic finish, lovely nose, bit thin palate pulls down, iron, but beautiful nose. This was apparently first vintage, sold in 1979 to Gaja who named the wine Sito Moresco. 89

1989 Petit Cheval
Served blind. Bright ruby, thin brick rim. Some cassis, figs, blueberries, tobacco, cedar, violets, detailed nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fresh, lively, red and darker berries, bit lean and somewhat firm, could have more fruit, slightly hollow finish. Has its charm. Quite long. 91

2014 Figula Balatonfüred-Csopaki Olaszriesling
Served blind. Pale lemon yellow. Ripe gooseberries, apples, citrus, some cats pie, yellow fruits. Freshish acidity, fruity, rounded, apples, some grapefruits and lemons, bit lazy. 87

2009 Château Carbonnieux blanc
Served blind. Pale lemon yellow. Grapefruits, minerals, oysters, lemons, fresh and lively nose. Fresh acidity, fruity, apples, citrus, grapefruits, minerals, fresh, leaner but  long. 92

2005 Château Couhins-Lurton blanc
Served blind. Towards lemon yellow. Grapefruits, apples, minerals, vanilla, spices, light tropical notes, evolving. Fresh acidity, fruity, intense, rounded, fruity, fresh, lively, rounded, smooth even if barrel notes are slightly uo front still, evolving nivcely, lovely balance. Swallowed the barrels far better than a 2001 last week. Long. 93

2005 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion
Served blind. Pale golden. Butter, fruity, tropical, vanilla and honey, almost like a dessert wine on the nose. Freshish acidity, ripe, fruity, vanilla, spices, smokey, bit alcohollic, towards somewhat ungainly. 86

2004 Duplessis Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre
Served blind. Asparagus, oysters, chalk, lime, unripe green apples, actually intense chalk on the nose. Fresh acidity, leaner, fresh, some lively notes but lacks fruit to balance it, leaner and thinner palate. 87

2002 Louis Jadot Corton-Pougets
Served blind. Bright ruby. Cooked plums, strawberry jam, alcohol notes, not a particularly fresh nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, bit hollow, warm, lacks fruit, has some spices and vanilla, red berries, youthful but a bit hollow. It sharpens up with air but it never impresses. 89

2005 Joseph Phelps Insignia
Deep ruby. Cassis, coffee, dark fruits, intense, vanilla, spices, dark chocolate. Lightøy scented and floral behind layers of fruit, far better bottle than last year. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity, intense, sweet, dark fruits, vanilla and spices. Still a bit warm, alcohol shines through, coffee and chocolate, anise finish, long. 94

2005 Casa Nocera Merlot
Served blind. Ruby. Coffee, liquorice, cooked fruits, massive and rich. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, tich, coffee, fruity, blueberries, bramble, alcohol, rich, massive in one way, hollow in another way, sweet dark fruits. Slight spicy note. 83

2007 Moestoe Cornas Coteau de Reynard
Served blind. Cloudy purple, pink rim. Alcohol up front, ripe bramble, vanilla and alcohol nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, red berries, sweet and sour, lively but lacks complexity, dark fruits. It is funky and weird, some may love the almost unbalanced liveliness between herbs and dark berries. To me its pretty uninteresting. 85

Served blind. Bright ruby. Scented, bit subdued nose, some cassis, anise, leather, refreshing nose but tender. Almost delicate. Fresh acidity, ripe and few tannins, mature, served on the cool side, liquorice, leather, some figs and prunes, good length. With answer in hand, not optimal bottle. 87

Bottom neck fill. Ruby, garnet rim. Scented, dark fruits, cassis, some figs, prunes, leather, violets, layered nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, structured, figs, prunes, seems a bit mature for it's age, bit short. Smells lovely, doesn't quite live up to it on the palate. 92

2000 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Ruby, thin garnet rim. Spices, pepper, figs, dark fruits, intense. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity, ripe, rich, sweet fruits, but leaner, bit hollow finish, good length. 89

2007 Bruno Clair Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos -St-Jacques
Bright ruby. Tight, closed, fruity, red berries, scented, needs time to open. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fresh, lively, tight, very tight for the vintage, toght and lean finish, but long. 90-93

2007 Domaine de la Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru Clos des 60 Ouvres
Bright garnet. Scented, red berries, fruity, elegant nose, fairly detailed. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, red berries, crispy and fresh, leaner, detailed, elegant, lovely balance, long. 92

1998 Schoffit Rangen de Thann Clos Saint-Théobald Sélection de Grains Nobles
Light amber. Dried apricots, caramel, toffee, botrytis, quite intense. Fresh acidity, fruity, playful, excellent balance, detailed, rounded, elegant, smooth and long. Gorgeous. 94
