99 Leroy Meursault Perrieres, 98 Mugnier Musigny, 05 Trapet Chambertin and more

1999 Maison Leroy Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières:
Soaked cork which seems to be an issue with both domaine and negoc Leroy bottles from my experience. Towards golden, nuts, butter, minerals, ripe lemons, touch of bacon fat, ever so slightly smoky, complex and layered. Fresh acidity, refreshing and playful with nutmeg, touch of coffee and pralines. Almost like an old Champagne on aromas. Lemons and an intense yet refined minerality, almost smoky towards the finish. Massive length. It tightens up with air, getting more citrusy, superb minerality. 95

2009 Domaine Ponsot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes:
Bright ruby. Started out a bit edgy and oaky, but after more than an hour in decanter, spicy, scented and red berries. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity and elegant, slightly sweet fruit, ripe, refreshing finish. 92

Leroy, Rousseau, Potel and Trotanoy

2004 Maison Leroy Puligny-Montrachet:
Pale golden. Touch of nuts and butter over apples, subdued minerals. Fresh acidity, elegant, rounded Puligny, maybe it lacks a bit of personality, but a very fine village. Not a touch of premox. Long. 90

2008 Armand Rousseau Mazy- Chambertin:
Bright ruby. Scented, layered nose, redcurrants, raspberries and slightly unripe wild strawberries. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, a bit lean body, refreshing but a bit green and somewhat unripe. This from Riedel Vinum Burgundy. In Riedel Sommelier Burgundy it's extremelly scented, almost like Christmas tea, cinamon, rounder yes, but lacks the nuances, and still has that slightly green touch. In Riedel Vinum Riesling it's less scented, more on somewhat unripe red berries and tighter palate. It was as long from all glasses, but fuller from the two first ones mentioned. 94

1989 Nicolas Potel Clos de la Roche:
Ruby brick rim. Earthy first, getting more fruity and strawberries with air. After an hour in decanter it opens up more and more. In Riedel Vinum Riesling it's a bit tight, but focused and fresh, verging on acidic. In Riedel Vinum Burgundy, again rounder and more scented, even floral. Acidity is more balanced and the wine feels more rounded and much more pleasant. Maybe even longer, something I didn't find on the Rousseau. Riedel Sommelier Burgundy and the aromas almost dissapears, but even rounder on the palate. On both wines, I find that the nuances and some of the complexity is lost for a roundness in the bigger glass. 96

1988 Château Trotanoy:
Very earthy and almost dusty first. After two hours in decanter a totally different ballgame. Truffles, blueberries, cedar and leather. Sos bois and anise. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, refreshing and elegant fruit, towards seductive, layered and complex. Long finish. 95

2004 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée;

2004 Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanée;
Cloudy brick appearance. Fresher and more youthful than the last two bottles, feeling more like it was at release, but the colour is very different. Even some of the typical herbs of the vintage, but they're only evident for the first ten minutes. Redcurrants, unripe raspberries, coffee and morellos. Extreme acidity, almost on the harsh side, the teeth start to itch. The acidity carries the redcurrants far out in the aftertaste, visiting a place of minerality, almost salty. Strange colour for such a young wine, almost like 58 Gaja Barolo, but finally a bottle that didn't seem cooked. Yet again, a worrying cork, seems to have been more or less soaked. This is very typical of Domaine Leroy from my experience. 92

99 Leroy Bourgogne Blanc

1999 Leroy SA Bourgogne Blanc;
Golden colour, some tropical and mineral notes, not very intense. Needs time to open, gets fuller with air, evolving nicely, drink soon, fresh acidity, almost flinty finish. Some bitterness. 86

Leroy falling apart....

2004 Leroy Vosne-Romanée;
Cloudy brick colour. It has never been that clear, but the nose have been fresh and vibrant, with huge amounts of fruit, now (I tasted it starting already last year) and with this bottle, a surprising decay has started very early. Almost a nature wine now, with some strange fruit in the back, and an unbalanced acidity in front. I'm not even rating it.

Wednesday, 16 March 2011
