1893 Mathilde Henriques Terrantez Campanario

Amber with green gold rim. 24 bottles only, bottled from a demijohn, bottled in February 2024. Mathilde Henriques was the grandmother or great grandmother of todays owners of Barbeito, as far as I have understood. Rich, intense, almonds, citrus and caramel, passion fruits, dried apricots, volatile notes. Fresh acidity, dried fruits, anise, spices, detailed, intense, layered, long. Something I for sure will never taste again. Served blind by the owners of O'Goveto who held an amazing Madeira tasting just a fews days earlier, and kindly let our table taste a little bit left behind. Narrower. 95

 

1863 Barbeito Bual

Amber with green gold rim. Dried fruits, almonds, intense, dried apricots nose, spices. Fresh acidity, intense, detailed, layered, intense, caramel, detailed, rich and smoky finish, long. Also at O'Goveto, janother left over from the large old Madeira tasting days before, ust a little large sip left in the bottle, but just enough for a tasting note. Thank you! 94

A very fragrant and citrusy and somewhat light on it's feet Earl Grey.

Chaplon Meng Ding Huang Ya (yellow tea):

A somewhat nutty and grassy and ever so slightly floral yellow tea. Rounded and very elegant, superb. 

1863 Barbeito Boal:

Amber with yellowish rim. Intense nose of layered dried fruits. Nuts, almonds, apricots, very complex. Fresh and lively acidity, balanced and intense, extremelly long finish. 95

2002 Pol Roger

Pale lemon yellow, small bubbles. Citrus and lemons, some yeast and green apples behind. Tighter than last bottle. Fresh acidity, elegant mousse, balanced and lovely, almost frail structure. Long. 92

2007 Lagunilla Reserva:

Bright ruby. Elegant blueberries and licorice nose. Not that intense, nuanced, almost Burgundian. Fresh acidity, rounded tannins, a bit oaky on the palate, ruining seemingly elegant fruit. 82

1962 Château Gruaud- Larose:

Excellent fill one cm below cork. Ruby with broad garnet rim with a hint of orange. Figs, anise, leather and floral notes. Scented, nuanced and layered, never intense. Transparent and light on it's feet. Fresh acidity, tannins more or less gone, refreshing, adding fruit and body with air. A Bordeaux for Burgundy lovers. Very long. 94

Laurent-Perrier Grand Siecle:

This bottle have rested in my cellar for about five years. Pale golden with tiny bubbles. Ever so slightly toffee behind apples, elegant minerals, some butter and yeast. Fresh acidity, lively and very elegant mousse. Refined and layered, nuanced. Very long finish. 93+

Light amber colour, raisins, citrus, touch of coffee, nuts, almonds, marsipan, orange marmalade, very complex, quite intence, great acidity, very refreshing, very long finish. 94

1863 Barbeito Boal;
Amber colour, raisins, figs, hints of apricots, nuts, almonds, hazelnuts, well balanced and complex, very fresh and livelly acidity, extremelly long finish. 95

1830 Barbeito Malvazia;
Tasted at Barbeito outside Funchal, served by Ricardo Freitas froma bottle he has in his office. He recons it to be one of the best Madeiras Barbeito has ever had, and he has this bottle open in his office for many years, taking a small sip a few times a year to have a taste of perfection. I was lucky enough to have a small sip. Amber with orange hints, light oxidation, raisins, figs, almost sweet nose, nuts, citrus, even the small amount in the glass fills the room with aromas, massive nose, extremelly complex. The palate is as extreme as the nose, the acidity dances back and forth on the tongue for minutes, always with new flavours, aftertaste for many minutes, extreme wine. 100
