Portuguese wines tasted
2009 Terras do Demo Brut
Straw yellow, small bubbles. Minerals, some yeast and some rubber notes nose, wax. Freshish acidity, somewhat bitter, leaner mousse, some smoky notes, leaner finish. Made from Malvasia and Verdelho. Rubbery notes towards Cava in style. 87
2014 Falcoria Fernão Pires (Fernau pirsch)
Pale lemon yellow. Light floral note, quite elegant, light butter and peach note nose. Freshish acidity, fruity, leaner, fresh, some peach, pears, then a slightly smoky note finish, good length. Fernão Pires is the same as Maria Gomes grape variety. Lightly creamy finish, somewhat flat finish. Fermented in new oak, then 50% aged in wood. 87
2011 Casa Santos Lima Sousão (tenturier)
Deepish ruby. Liquorice, blackberries and blueberries nose, smoky notes nose (4-6 months in partial oak). Sousão is the same as Vinhão in Vinho Verde. Fresh acidity, lively, ripe tannins, somewhat hollow before leather and anise, earthy palate, rustic, good length. 86
2014 Casa Santos Lima Al-Ria
Ruby. Intense, rich, fruity, alcohol, some vanilla and spices. Freshish acidity, ripe tannins, rich, ripe, fruity but warm finish, not fully balanced. 85
2009 Quinta do Pinto Touriga Nacional
Ruby. Dark fruits, plums, some anise, blueberries. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, alcohol, ripe, leaner, has freshness but alcohol shines through, some herbal notes and jammy notes, seem to be overripe grapes in here without enough phenolic ripeness. Or bad selection. 83
2012 Herdade São Miguel Reserva
100% Touriga Franca. Ruby. Alcohol, dark fruits, almost sweaty, some minerals,vanilla and spices, almost peppery note. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, intense coffee, some bitter notes palate, some herbs and grass, cocoa, good length, different. 85
2012 Cartuxa Evora Tinto Colheito
Aragonez (Temperanillo), Alicante Bouschet, Alfrocheiro and Trincadeira blend. Deepish ruby. Dark fruits, vanilla, some spices, quite intense, some red berries and blueberries. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity, ripe, rich, juicy, some chewy structure, intense, some liquorice, dark berries, good length. Bit warm. 88
2011 Periquita Reserva
Castelão, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca. Ruby. Scented, dark fruits, some floral notes, some vanilla and spices nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, juicy, fruity, elegant, dark berries, red fruits, anise, good length. 88
2009 Sivipa Moscatel Roxo
Made of Moscatel Roxo. Cloudy orange, amber rim. Intense fruity nose, sweet and grapey nose, some blood orange, honey and apricots. Fresh acidity, fruity, ripe, rich, intense, bit warm but balances, not as sweet as the nose suggest (19 g. RS), thicker palate, good length. Fresh for having just 4 grams acidity. 89
