LW opening the 63
1963 Fonseca's Vintage Port;
Garnet, brick rim. Astonishing nose, so layered and nuanced, complex, floral, all sorts of berries and cakes, like entering a patisserie, a spice shop, and a regular bakery at once. Superb! Fairly sweet attack, superb acidity, coffee, mocca, dark chocolate, very long indeed, my second bottle, very similar from the last, this one slightly more nuanced. 96
We opened a bottle of 1963 Fonseca that we acquired from a cellar clearance. This was about 10 years ago. There was no label, the capsule was illegible, so we didn't know what it was. The bottle was a bit leaky but the levels were pretty good for a '63. We only realised it was Fonseca 1963 when we pulled the cork - it was a very pleasant surprise. It still ranks as one of the most enjoyable vintage ports I have tried. Soft, smooth, velvety, bags of red fruit, and a slighty spicy, but not spiritous aftertaste. I am glad you enjoyed yours too!
ReplyDeleteYes Dominic, I have now tried it two times, the first bottle was as you described without text or label, from the cellar of an English MW, and he ensured it was the 63 Fonseca. After tasting this (actually, by coincidence with the same MW as non of us brought the bottle), it was for sure the 63 Fonseca the time before as well, as both bottles were remarkably similar in style. My best mature Vintage Port as well.
