2008 Pomerol and Saint-Emilion, IMW Annual Claret Tasting
Pomerol
Beauregard:
Ruby. Sweet blueberries, ripe and chocolate. Fresh acidity, again a bit sweet and rich, lacks the normal elegance of this property. 90
Clinet:
Ruby. Seductive nose, some blueberries, almost scented and slightly floral. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, elegant and long. 92+
Gazin:
Deep ruby. Intense nose, lots of spices and barrel notes overshadowing fine fruit. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, needs years for those barrels to settle. 90
La Conseillante:
Ruby. Rich and ripe nose, blueberries and some vanilla. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, superb texture, lovely balance, fresher palate than nose. Very long. 94
La Croix de Gay:
Ruby. Fresh nose, blueberries and ever so slightly floral. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, leaner style, slightly herbal finish. Refreshing. 88+
La Fleur de Gay:
Ruby. Elegant blueberries nose with a whiff of white chocolate. Fresh acidity, elegant and smooth. 90
Nenin:
Ruby. Blueberries, fine tea and some vanilla. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, softer feel than a bottle four weeks back, lovely. 91
Petit Village:
Deep ruby. Rich blueberries and coffee nose, lots of oak. Freshish acidity, ripe tannins, to rih for me. 88
Clos René:
Ruby. Blueberries and elegant nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, a bit leaner style, quite elegant but slightly dry finish. 89
Saint-Emilion:
Beauséjour-Bécot:
Deep ruby. Coffee and blueberry nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, quite rich but balances it, long. 91
Canon:
Deep ruby. Sweet plums, blueberries and coffee. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, richer style for Canon, fresher finish. 91
Figeac:
Deep ruby. Again a rich nose for Figeac, cassis, blueberries and some plums. Palate is lighter with fine red berries fruit. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, almost mineraly finish. 92+
Clos Fourtet:
Ruby. Typical mid 2000's Clos Fourtet nose with blueberries, cassis, and that herbal note. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, elegant and leaner style. Long. 92
Pavie:
Dark ruby. Rich, sweet, dark and ungainly. Massive, rapes the palate. Not only that, why the heavy bottle? This could fair well in a Port tasting, but lacks the refreshing acidity of Port. Why make this in Bordeaux? Verges on undrinkable, at least with food, and if you manage more than one glass on its own, you're made of stearner stuff than me. 83?
Soutard:
Deep ruby. Rich blueberries nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, a bit rich palate, but never sweet. 88
